About Us

Ms. Figueroa, Principal

Welcome, I am the proud principal of PS 676 a small school in Red Hook, with much to offer. Our students begin their journey in PreK and continue into the fifth grade. As a newly designed Harbor school our students study Maritime themed additions to the curricula, and experiment in their very own community. Throughout their elementary school journey students learn about its rich aquatic resources and build on their knowledge and experiences as they relate to maritime. This model prepares our students for college and careers in the maritime field as they transition from middle school, high school and on to college.

Parent Coordinators act as a bridge between home and school. When parents have questions or concerns or ideas, Ms. Marie will help solve the problem or find the right person to speak with to get answers or to get your new ideas underway. Marie was born and raised on Staten Island and has lived in Brooklyn since 1997. She is the mom of two teenagers and was the PTA president of her son's middle school for three years. A children's book author and art school graduate, Marie also loves to read in classrooms and run craft workshops for parents.

Hello, I am the Pre-k teacher here at PS 676! I have been working with early ed students for over ten years. Here in Pre-K we learn through hands-on activities and play. We have exciting themes and bring the ocean life into every unit along with our community and more! Our goal in Pre-K is to have fun as we  learn how to be social, emotionally and academically prepared for Kindergarten.

I'm Tim Heintz, a special education teacher, originally from Staten Island NY, but now a Greenpoint Brooklyn transplant. I love sports, construction, food, trains, construction and the environment! I also love seeing or making movies. I have been making movies since the 6th grade as IS 24 and now I have the awesome opportunity to make movies with the students as PS 676. The one thing that I learned while making movies is that there is always learning happening. So whether you are on set or in the classroom every second has an opportunity to teach you something, you just need to be ready to learn.

Greetings! My name is Glenn Collins. I am a 4th & 5th grade math instructor at P.S. 676.

I currently teach mathematics, the way I wanted the subject taught to me decades ago. As an elementary school student I was bullied by the mathematical beast of long division. In my head so many steps. I thought that  I was battling an octopus. I was requested to memorize, memorize, & memorize some more! The myriad of equations glared at me, almost whispering “little failure”. I pretended to have a series of stomachaches to avoid the Numbers Bully waiting for me at school. My dad thought I was being harassed by an aggressive rider on the cheese bus. My dad was mistaken, this Bully   was around every time math  was mentioned.

I didn’t conquer the Numbers Bully until I became a teacher over 20 years ago.

I model for my young mathematicians how to defend themselves against any Numbers Bully. I offer methods to think strategically. My students have the option of using manipulatives & multiple types of representations to solve mathematical tasks & equations.

The strongest defense against any bullying is communication. I guide my mathematicians to verbally share their ideas. But question everything & everyone. Especially in moments of uncertainty & error.
